It seems almost forever since The Wombats exploded onto the scene with the likes of ‘Kill The Director’ and ‘Let's Dance To Joy Division’. But, nearly three years since their debut, the scouse trio return with ‘Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)’. Who out there doesn’t love all three of those? The Wombats have taken the zeitgeist and ran with it.
This single is very much in ‘the now’ lyrically, and their kind of speed induced indie-pop should definitely please a young audience, intoxicated by Red Bull and Twilight. Matt Murphy sings about losing himself to a night out in Tokyo, which is probably the best place to listen to this single, drunk, hyper and ready for a good time where you can ignore the beasts from your past. But watch out for those love bites.
This is very much what one would expect from The Wombats, though with more synths than guitars this time around. They are never going to re-invent the wheel, but they may have quite a good time trying.
