It seems like the Welsh trio have been around for ages, maybe because they pretty much have. So, the re-release of ‘Austere’ is maybe de ja vu for long term fans. But to anyone else unlucky enough to not have got on board the good ship Joy Formidable, they are about to have one wild ride.
Everyone loves a track they can join in with, and ’Austere’ is certainly one of those. Here we are treated to a barrage of cooing, before mega rock pixie Ritzy Bryan’s sweet vocals take over. So far, so pleasant, until the delicate bass line and simplistic melodies give way to a Smashing Pumpkins buzz saw guitar assault. It’s these little surprises that make Joy Formidable such an interesting prospect. How a sweet looking girl can mutate into a guitar god in a flash is incredible exciting and live they turn everything up to, at least 11.
