Detroit Social Club - Kiss The Sun EP

It’s difficult to know how to describe the latest EP from Northerners Detroit Social Club without forcing people to listen to it first. While there are shades of producer Jim Abbiss (Kasabian, DJ Shadow) there’s something wholly original here too.

Like a brooding beast the title track builds into a filtered vocal, big-room crescendo as guitars and cymbals crash into a stomping rock track that rarely lets up. After such energy the rolling beats, collective vocals and mysterious synths of ‘Black and White’ provide welcome relief.

The real track of note here is ‘Thousand Kings’, an epic, downbeat anthem that offers what the first tune only tempted us with. From rumbling kick drum to distorted guitar solo it’s as positively uplifting a sound as anyone could imagine, held together with the chorus ‘We are strong’. Ending with cataclysmic drums and a lasting refrain, it borders on too much but stops just short.
