Bombay Bicycle Club - Evening / Morning

Could Bombay Bicycle Club have anticipated that this is the year they'd finally get some kudos? Fresh from wowing the hordes on the NME Awards Tour and their rightly deserved win as Best New Band at the, er, NME Awards, comes their re-release of 'Evening/Morning'. Perhaps predicting that this overdue success might lead to the glare of too much exposure, the band have done the opposite of cashing in and have made it fairly tricky to actually get hold of the single; on limited edition vinyl, each possessing individually designed artwork, etc etc, maybe to retain a rarity value. Or the reason could just be a simple hankering to be 'a bit more interesting' (their own words).

Either way, this is one of the more energetic tracks off their intricately crafted and summery debut and utterly compelling, from the mounting tension of the ambient, reverie-like intro, all snare drum and delicate picking that hints at West Coast influences, to the low buzz of grinding bass, and a resonant guitar line that rings out like a siren (the emergency services kind, not the mythological bird-woman). It all comes together with undeniable effect at the chorus, along with Jack Steadman's tremulous vocals, probably the most divisive factor of the band's sound - but here the production plays down its vibrato quality, foregrounding the music instead. When he declares with quivery charm though, “I am ready to owe you anything, I'm ready to owe you anything”, it's near-impossible to resist its heady premise and not have a shuffle along to it.
