Blood Red Shoes - Light It Up

Brighton-based duo Blood Red Shoes are back with the first single off their new album 'Fire Like This', that flickers deceptively before exploding with a roar.

Steven Ansell's reedy voice is rendered endearing by his semi-drawl, accompanied by the touch of sweet distortion on the guitar, making this an angsty yet unassuming piece of indie - that is, until you're slammed without warning into the catharsis of an heavy grunge chorus straight out of 1992, and it all falls into place beautifully.

The whimsical introspection of the verses contrasts starkly with Ansell's and guitarist Laura-Mary Carter's combined shouts of “LIGHT! IT! UP!”, screaming with a defiance and redemption that even Cobain would be proud of, and is definitely going to be the source of many 'fuck, yeah!' fist-punch-to-the-air moments on their current tour.

The brief but powerful breakdown towards the end is an organised mess of delicately crashing cymbals and discordant riffing, lending the song an extra atmospheric dimension. Without a doubt, a stunner of a return.
