Alex Metric - It Starts EP

Imagine that montage moment, when the TV show has quick jump cuts round the main character's night out, with a lens effect on to suggest intoxication. Flashes of talking to girls, drinking beer, then shots, then staggering round, repeat repeat til collapsing into bed. The soundtrack is 'Start Again' by Alex Metric.

He's blagged himself a slot on the In New DJs We Trust section of Radio 1. Judge Jules and Pete Tong will be quaking in their boots. A DJ who can make songs that match anything he spins? An ageist BBC policy and an ageing Radio 1? Watch your backs, boys.

The tracks here are premium dance songs. Metric has a fine grasp of the importance of dynamics in dance music. 'Gusto' uses tensions ramping synths to take the track into the breakdown, layers of keyboards and drums making dense, intricate pieces of music.

'Discotron' is well named, synths building and building, and falling and falling, like The Chemical Brothers used to do before they got obsessed with guest stars. Techno techno techno – this is bass heavy, high end heavy. Music to take drugs to, not that we advocate any of that. Nothing here is anything new, but it all hints towards a revival of the times when dance music was 'popular'. Alex Metric has some kind of future.
