The Young Republic - Paper Ships
'Paper Ships' drips deliciously from start to finish in melody and melancholy, both in equal measure, as you'd expect from a band of classically trained musicians.
Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, it should be no surprise to learn that The Young Republic are first and foremost influenced by Americana and roots music. However on closer inspection their musical compass appears to point in a couple of other directions as well - namely, to the North East, when the intro of Paper Ships cranks in with echoes of New York's E-Street Band and then over the border, when you begin to detect more than a hint of Toronto born Neil Young in their overall oeuvre.
Having said that, if you're going to be influenced by anyone then it may as well be two of the boldest giants ever to beat a path out of the North American continent. 'Paper Ships' drips deliciously from start to finish in melody and melancholy, both in equal measure, and as you'd expect from a band of classically trained musicians, the instrumentation is tastefully arranged throughout, with no one instrument dominating the other - proving that the Young Republic-ans are nothing if not democratic.
