The Temper Trap - Science Of Fear

Call your band The Temper Trap and release a single called 'Science Of Fear', and really you're asking for some preconceptions. Some kind of twisted, tongue-in-cheek comedic death metal act? Well, no. Intellectually stunted, hope to get lucky contemporary punk? Er, no. Describable as (wannabe) epic, big-room indie with electronic overtones, it's as disappointing as their name and track title. Not to say that the aforementioned alternative incarnations would have been better.

Ticking all the boxes on the 'How to Sound Like Bloc Party and Hard Fi' questionnaire, it's another case of a by-numbers band that will be good if it's your thing, immediately forgettable if not (you can almost see them in your mind's eye at this year's T4 On the Beach). Proud verses give way to even prouder choruses as we appear to race through a track that has a time signature which appears not to have been agreed on by all members. When will people learn?

Editors and the other members of the 21st Century's epic-stadia posse are successful because they remain focused on the details of the tunes, not just the whole aural collage. It's worth very little if your emotional crescendo has been denied the growing groove of a quality bassline to push things forward.
