The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed

"This is my hour/I'm never going to bed..." - a confident opening to Mike Skinner's new single, but after the first twenty seconds you'll feel like hitting the metaphorical sack. It's all too predictable.

It's not that it's bad, it's just that you know he could do better. 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' feels like a lifetime away, yet Skinner doesn't seem to have moved on. The bard of the street is flagging, no longer the Shakespeare, now more the Doctor Seuss of the urban music scene. A tired sounding sample, which sounds like a Simon Webbe reject, provides the background, with Skinner rambling over the top like a tired walk back after a big night out, kebab in hand.

'Everything Is Borrowed' is a grower but never reaches a high. It feels like Skinner's given up a little. The track is not intended to attract a new audience, who will no doubt be listening to 'Grime Wave' or the new Kano release. Instead 'Everything Is Borrowed' is preaching to the converted. Don't give up on The Streets, just lower your expectations.
