The Rivers - She Gives It Around

'She Gives It Around' is a record that amazes in just one aspect - that it can take a five piece band to make a song so derelict of ideas, passion and originality. Brighton's The Rivers stand testament to the 'let's stick to a formula that sells' attitude that also brought you The Kooks and The Pigeon Detectives amongst countless others.
Of late, such bands have been keen to wear their native accents on their sleeves; not so The Rivers, with lead singer Tom Borsberry singing in a wildly fluctuating accent that ranges from the south coast to the Deep South. If this is surprising then at least the return of the shout-along chorus can be relied upon. The track is depressingly predictable, from the under produced 'raw' sound to the pedestrian, anonymous rhythm section - this is truly soulless music.
We even get an afterthought of an instrumental break, presumably to the pad the track out. This is the bit where the band can posture and pose and look like they're really 'lost in the music' before hitting us again with the terrace chant chorus; Kaiser Chiefs have a lot to answer for.
The length of 'She Gives It Around' is its one saving grace. Clocking in at just over the two minute mark, even the band seem intent on getting it over and done with as quickly as possible, flying through the track at top-speed but still lacking in any real energy or punch.
