The Rakes - 1989

This is some seriously sophisticated indie-pop coming from The Rakes, who are returning from a two-year absence from the music industry. With '1989' they produce an explosive three-minute-rock-out the likes that we have most certainly seen before, but the passion channelled through the thumping rhythms and punk rock attitude is most defiant and effortlessly infectious.

The guitars are quirky and the drums jerk and slam up against them with a resounding effect, and the prominent vocals will ring in your ears and your brain for days following the first, second and third listen. This is substantially better than most of the indie you will hear this year - The Rakes may just drag you kicking and screaming along with them on their return to the forefront of British indie music.16/03/09Dom Smith
