The Hot Melts - (I Wish I Had) Never Been In Love

Genre promiscuity is positively encouraged these days. Gone are the times when you'd be able to walk into a record store, confidently march over to the punk section and be 99% certain that what you'd find there would be the exclusive, undiluted aforementioned punk you sought. Such security is nowhere to be found now.

With their finely sculpted hairstyles, tightly fitting attire and designer sunglasses they turn out reminiscent of manufactured popstars and indie scenesters - cue positioning in the rock and pop section. Yet at two minutes and twenty five seconds, their debut single '(I Wish I Had) Never Been In Love' is a solidly crafted, punchy tune welded together with bags of grit, determinism and impressive energy, suggesting they'd slot neatly into the alternative and punk aisles.

A rousing guitar riff, pulsating drums and an impassioned opening fill make a propulsive impression. Yet achingly basic lyrics and insufficient melodic development ensures the clamour is only ephemeral. This is a rudimentary paean to the greats of punk without exhibiting enough ferocity to make the group worthy of instant acclaim. The Hot Melts are a tasty proposition but consumption is still a little premature.
