The Duke Spirit - My Sunken Treasure

The Duke Spirit and their new single 'My Sunken Treasure' present a series of contradictions to the average listener. Like why record an album in the Californian desert and then go on to call it 'Neptune'? The single merely compounds the confusion by in places resembling a half-hearted Motown pastiche while at other points sounding sweetly soulful - very much depending on which mood you're in. And just to put the tin lid on the whole thing, instead of Aretha on vocals we have the detached tones of Liela Moss, sounding oddly reminiscent of the Nordic Nico.

Strangely, in spite of all the inconsistencies, it works. It won't change your life or anything but it may just soundtrack a supposedly dry summer inevitably filled with rain - which in context kinda makes sense.
