Similar in content and mood to Graham Coxon's 'Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery', 'Gardenia' contains a nice line in snappy one liners and bitterness: "the torture of the expressway at 5pm on Friday gives you some idea of how rejection makes me feel", sings Malkmus in butter-wouldn't-melt melodies furnished with sunshiny harmonies from the larynx of Janet Weiss.
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks conspire to provide a tune that while enjoyable at the time, fades from memory thereafter. Breezy coasting guitars meet some pretty but slight keyboards and while 'Gardenia' is insubstantial, it's still a nice enough slice of bubblegum indie.
