Scott Matthews - Elusive
Plagued with intricate guitar and the best new voice to emerge from 2007, 'Elusive' is relaxing but not relaxed, both inspired and inspiring.
This offering from Wolverhampton's Scott Matthews is a timely and welcome buck to the ongoing James Blunt trend, and with two fingers up, the slate may well be in for a scrub. As inadvertently in his lyrics, "it's finally real, there's nothing fake", Matthews' self-confessed colourful past plummets the contrived actions of his predecessors into stark disposition.
Plagued with intricate guitar and the best new voice to emerge from 2007, 'Elusive' is relaxing but not relaxed, both inspired and inspiring, and creates a sound with obvious parallels to Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and Willy Mason.
Its often poetic form complements the persistent unnerving melody, and makes for a fine modern ballad. The track will feel more than at home this summer, with its welly-clad, sun-burnt audience, when Matthews explores the festival circuit.
