Ray LaMontagne - Jolene

Don't be fooled by the title - this is not a cheesy Dolly Parton cover, it is far from it. This 'Jolene' is another mellow, emotive offering from Ray LaMontagne, the man with some of the smoothest, dulcet tones around at the moment, with his unmistakable voice transpiring to sing every word like he means it.

Although not as heart wrenching as the title track from 2006's 'Trouble', 'Jolene' still exudes folksy melancholic believability. This simplistic acoustic guitar, piano and violin ensemble is exquisitely beautiful; chilled, soothing and sublime, this is a song to drift away to. The perfect polarity to the mellowness is LaMontagne's achingly powerful voice which adds real depth and soul to the track. Lyrics such as "Still don't know what love means, still don't know what love means" may not be in the same league as Bob Dylan but they are poignant enough to add a little meaning, and a back story, to this relaxing yet gorgeous record. A definite one to wind down to.
