Patrick Watson - Luscious Life

Patrick Watson is the man behind the music. He is the main songwriter and lead singer of Montreal-based art-rock quartet with, strangely, the same name - Patrick Watson. In 'Luscious Life', the musical influences Patrick Watson draws upon are obvious. There is a definite air of Jeff Buckley, persistent musical references to Nick Drake and an undercurrent of Johnny Cash.

So imagine the disappointment when the music and Watson's voice begin repelling each other - over and underlapping, being on and off beat and so on. It soon becomes a distraction and later overbearing; a shame, when 'Luscious Life' is otherwise starting to sound like a worldly and established artist's new record.

Flipside 'The Storm' is free of experiment. Instead a foot-tapping, cheerful (probably without intent) and reflective song is delivered.

This release leaves you wanting to hear more of Patrick Watson - I am sure for every risk that doesn't come off, there are a hundred that do.
