This is just what we need right now - something to give the indie-skiffle kids a firm kick up the skinny-jeaned backside. As if born of despondency at the innocuousness of so much of the current music scene, 'Burn Faster' is a song that pulls at its own hair with sheer frustration, encouraging extremes and excess. A solid verse that blends The Smiths' 'Accept Yourself' with the Manics' 'Kevin Carter' gives in to a melodious, chanting chorus of rebel-rousing ferocity: "burn faster, cut deeper, hit harder, fall further!"
These Mancunians certainly rock harder than most bands, and if it weren't for the Britpop revival they'd be cutting more of a swathe now. Their edgy and melodic take on mainstream contemporary rock music recalls a time a few short years ago, when it seemed the now sadly departed Cooper Temple Clause might signal the future. We can only hope that Nine Black Alps live longer.
