This is a strange choice for a single. For one thing it's relatively downbeat and forlorn, and the hooks are few and far between, leaving the song sounding a little lifeless. Having been used to the band's previous singles, in particular 'Apply Some Pressure' and 'Our Velocity', perhaps we've come to expect something more energetic. After a few listens however, the appeal of 'Books From Boxes' reveals itself a little more.
A song about the inevitability and futility of relationships set to a jangly pop backing - the similarities to The Smiths are obvious. The lyrics border on the kind of ambiguous poetry that Morrissey would be happy to claim as his own too. There's a nice middle eight with a Johnny Marr-styled guitar break and then the song's as good as over - brief but to the point.
The track is lyrically sharp, musically bright and doesn't outstay its welcome, but it's a decent album track at best. As a single it'll be a surprise to see it go the distance.
