Mason Jennings - Fighter Girl
The first thing you notice about Mason Jennings is how much he sounds like Lou Reed. The second thing you notice is that there is not much else to notice.
The first thing you notice about Mason Jennings is how much he sounds like Lou Reed. The second thing you notice is that there is not much else to notice. It must be both a blessing and a curse to sound so much like an all-time great - a blessing in that it will get you noticed, and a curse in that you will always suffer by comparison. Such is the case here; Jennings does himself no favours by completely failing to put any kind of personal touch into things, seeming happy to bask in the reflected glory.
'Fighter Girl' is a light and airy strum-along, with no real sense of effort on display. "Hey, hey, little fighter girl, it's you and me baby against this whole wide world" is a great example of the lethargy that infuses the song throughout. Perhaps Jennings is a genius, his songs floating on a sea of hidden meaning and emotion, but it is certainly not apparent on this showing. Perhaps his particular talent would be better showcased in a Velvet Underground tribute band.
