"We've tried to bring beats and electronic music together with traditional instruments, without making a horrible mess", explains the Ipswich-based 24-year-old singer-songwriter. Just as you can take this statement as either self-deprecating or mock-modest, so you can his music, or more specifically, his voice.
You may find his working class Dizzee Rascal-esque non-glottal stopped delivery artificial and forced, or genuine and touching. The same goes for his unusual rush-rush phrasing over grimey balladic beats in the verses, and his Bonnie 'Prince' Billy-like warbling filling the spaces in the stripped down choruses. Lines such as "I looked for someone to.../Tie up my shoelaces and stop me trippin' up" will consequently seem either disarming and sympathetic, or cloying and laughable. Or you could be caught in two minds - disappointed not to find out from this release who the real 'James Severy, singer-songwriter' is.
