Gang Gang Dance - Rawwar EP
It's difficult to imagine anyone sitting down to listen to this for pleasure rather than curiosity, as at times it is highly unsettling and sounds like a nightmare.
New York music has never sounded so nightmarish until now. Those of a nervous disposition or drug induced paranoia should probably leave this boundary pushing EP 'Rawwar' well alone.
'Nico Man' is quite interesting to begin, with the offbeat drums and irksome melody. However when the vocals kick in, it all sounds a bit like an experimental musical moment from The Mighty Boosh. 'The Earthquake That Frees Prisoners' is simply a collection of sounds and muddled vocals, which melt into one another without the greatest of ease.
What seems to be at the core of the quartet's focus is experimenting. To name but a few of the avenues they dare to explore, they dapple in tribal beats, psychedelic rhythms and religious-esque chants. This is unlike anything you have probably heard or will hear in the near future but the closest comparison would have to be Bjork at her least commercial. It's difficult to imagine anyone sitting down to listen to this for pleasure rather than curiosity, as at times it is highly unsettling and sounds like a nightmare.
