An 11-minute single with 'rat' in the title; it could only really be Fucked Up couldn't it? The Canadian hardcore six-piece are back with a truly epic follow-up to the mind-blowing force of last year's 'The Chemistry Of Common Life'. Undeniably the masters of a heart-stopping build-up, Fucked Up have cracked it again with a virtuosic symphony that swoops deftly from a delicate mesh of chiming guitars to a cataclysmic cacophony capable of causing major otological damage.
With just a couple of simple riffs piercing the awesome turbulence, 'Year Of The Rat' is catchy, but the monstrously gruff and gritty vocals, as always, prevent the band's sound verging anywhere within a thousand mile radius of pop. This song is perhaps best likened to a demonic rampage through the fiery chasms of doom that somehow evokes more than just terror. It's sadistic, hell-bent and fierce but even after eleven minutes its victims will be begging for more.
