Esser - Work It Out
Another fine demonstration of Esser's geeky experimentation with conflicting moods and styles.
Formerly the drummer in disbanded trash-rock outfit Ladyfuzz, this young man is on a rampage taking scenester-packed dancefloors by storm. His third single 'Work It Out' is another fine demonstration of Esser's geeky experimentation with conflicting moods and styles.
Opening with a mesh of frenzied bleeps, the track soon settles into a steady-paced stroll that's guaranteed to have your foot tapping. With glimpses of guitar that wouldn't sound out of place on a Strokes record, most of the substance comes from backing vocals layered between a strong shuffle beat and stylish electro-pop waffle. As an unbearably catchy chorus permeates the brain, the verses swagger around with attitude that could easily give The Streets a run for their money.
While Esser's lyrics are simple and understated, the Jamie T smacks with which he delivers them give reason to expect big things from him in the future. "I have a habit of getting my foot stuck in my mouth" is hardly core-shaking poetry, but it's regrettably something we'll all relate to.
