Born Ruffians - I Need A Life

This song starts wonderfully with vocals that gently pounce upon the listener. Then the guitar riff and ensuing music plucked straight from the handbook of guitar music crush the song instantly. There are brash and soulless backing vocals that come on like a mini choir of devils - the song never recovers from these aspects that have trashed any chance of there being a good song here. Shot down almost from the start, the title of the song is hard to not comment on, except to say that it feels like an own goal from the start.

First b-side 'Hummingbird' is stronger, as the vocals are actually decipherable along with a gentler guitar part that is equally its match. The control of the voice in parts verges on warbling with little direction, and it just survives, until the end when a vocal fit of 'oh's break down and ruin what had gone before.

Second b-side 'So Long, Tadpole' is a pointless enough song too. It has some vague appeal, but is also stuttering and rather meaningless. Only a ska rhythm will ever likely be remembered from this three songs, and that's only if you like ska music.
