Black Kids - Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo)
Posted 19th Sep 2008 in Single Reviews, Black Kids by Liam Clune |

'Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo)' is the latest offering from current indie-pop darlings Black Kids. Unlike the misspelled title, it actually manages to keep from being overly irritating. If you've heard either of the two previous singles, you know exactly what to expect. 80s style keyboard riffs, punchy female-led chorus, and Reggie Youngblood's teenage wail in emotional discomfort - all the usual boxes are ticked. It is the kind of song that you imagine playing at the school disco your parents went to, decked in frilly shirts and backcombed quiffs.
Like with the previous singles, there is a strong suspicion that Youngblood found a box of Duran Duran and Adam Ant LPs, dusted them off and stitched them together for the under 20s who missed it the first time around. This kitsch quality is central to Black Kids' sound. It does work, after a fashion. Like candyfloss, 'Look At Me' is colourful, fun and sugary sweet. Just don't expect any real substance.
