TMZ accused of racism, bigotry over Boston bombing article that blames hip hop
Gossip website article leads to a slew of Twitter parodies
TMZ has been accused of insensitivity, racism and bigotry after posting an article on the Boston bombings and subsequent manhunt.
The gossip website posted a brief article in which they appeared to be linking the terrorist attack to hip hop music and its "violent", "degrading" culture. The evidence? Tamerlan was signed up to a website called Real-HipHop.com and liked hip hop.
They wrote: "What's interesting... Hip hop lyrics are notoriously violent and often degrading to women. Tamerlan Tsarnaev has a boxing profile in which he says he doesn't take his shirt off much because he doesn't want women to get bad ideas, adding, "I'm very religious." This statement is significantly more conservative than the hip hop genre."
Media commentators have branded the article insensitive and racist. And as you might expect, Twitter users are using the hashtag #TMZReports.
One Twitter user wrote: "Tamerlan got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."
#TMZReportsthe first bomber yelled to cops "Heeshee, Blowtishus. Skeeve, delicious."And out of sheer confusion, they shot him to death.— Sir Daddy (@Vandalyzm) April 19, 2013
Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are the prime suspects in the Boston marathon bombings – an attack that saw two men detonate pressure cooker bombs as part of a seemingly random act. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with the police; Dzhokhar is now on the run somewhere in Boston, causing local police, SWAT and armed units to put the entire city on lockdown.
