Midweek chart: James Arthur on course for his first number one single

Amazon, iTunes and now the UK singles chart: James Arthur is on course for his first number one single after strong sales in his first 48 hours of release.

James has earned himself the fastest-selling single of 2012 after managing to sell an impressive 255,000 copies of 'Impossible'.

The sales figures are much stronger than Little Mix's debut single, which struggled in its first week on the UK singles chart. Despite the strong lead, it looks like James might just miss out on surpassing Shayne Ward's record of 742,000.

Britney Spears is currently the second-highest new entry with 'Scream and Shout' featuring punctuation anarchist will.i.am. Bruno Mars' 'Locked Out of Heaven' is at three, while former number one Gabrielle Aplin moves down to four.

It looks like The X Factor has done wonders for Rihanna and Emeli Sandé, too. Rihanna occupies the sixth and eighth positions on the chart with 'Diamonds' and 'Stay' respectively. Emeli's 'Clown' moves up to 24.

Bruno Mars is at number one on the album charts with new album 'Unorthodox Jukebox', which is a whopping 22,000 copies ahead of Michael Bublé's 'Christmas'. Emeli Sandé moves up to three with 'Our Version of Events'.
