M.I.A. has promised fans that her new album is due out in April 2013, but warned them that she is still working on the record.

M.I.A., real name Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, told Gold Coast Bulletin that she has been working on the record for months now and that it should be ready soon.

"It's due in April, which is the Tamil new year – April 15th – and I'm still working on it," she revealed.

Studio executives threw a spanner into the album's production when they branded it "too positive" a sound for the 'Bad Girls' singer, asking her to "darken it up a bit".

"I thought I'd finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago."

"It's like 'We just built you up as the public enemy No. 1 and now you're coming out with all this positive stuff.'" M.I.A. said that she was not necessarily complying with the advice. "I'm taking my time to decide what they mean."

The new record will be her first since the release of 'Maya' in 2010.
