The Lostprophets have broken their silence on Ian Watkins and the allegations the singer was involved in child sex offences.

Watkins, the band's lead singer, was yesterday charged with conspiracy to rape a one-year-old girl and five other counts of child sex offences. He was remanded in custody following an appearance in a Cardiff court.

In a statement at the band's website, the band spoke out for the first time: 'Following charges made today against Ian Watkins, we find ourselves in a state of shock. We are learning about the details of the investigation along with you. It is a difficult time for us and our families, and we want to thank our fans for their support as we seek answers. Signed, Jamie, Lee, Luke, Mike and Stu.'

The band has faced a torrent of negative comments on Facebook and Twitter after the news hit yesterday.

Steps singer Ian 'H' Watkins also faced a slew of offensive tweets as Twitter users confused the two performers.

Watkins will appear in court on December 31, 2012 with two other women. He denies all charges against him.
