Ian Watkins has now been remanded in custody after an appearance at Cardiff court.

The Lostprophets frontman today faced charges of severe child sex abuse at Cardiff Magistrate's Court and more details of the singer's alleged crimes were revealed.

The Welsh rocker is accused of conspiring to engage in sexual touching with children; possessing, making and distributing indecent sexual images, and possessing what is being referred to as "extreme" animal pornography. Watkins is also alleged to have conspired to rape a one-year-old girl with another woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Barrister for the defence Tom Crowther said Ian Watkins would be denying all of the charges against him.

Alan Knight, the presiding magistrate of the court, remanded Watkins into custody alongside two other women, aged 20 and 24. All three of the accused will appear before the Crown Court on New Year's Eve (December 31).

A spokesman confirmed Watkins' identity earlier to help with the investigation: "In order to assist their investigation, South Wales Police has named the man as Ian Watkins, a member of the rock group Lostprophets."

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Peter Doyle said specially-trained staff were available to speak to anyone with concerns or information regarding the investigation.

"I want to encourage anyone who has any concerns or information which they think may be relevant to contact us," he added.

"Safeguarding children involved in such cases is always a high priority and as such measures have already been taken."

Police are asking anyone with any information concerning the investigation to contact the Operation Globe incident room on 0800 056 0154, or the NSPCC on 0800 389 5347.

During their career, Lostprophets sold 3.5 million albums and even earned a number nine hit last year with 'Weapons'.

Representatives from Sony have declined to comment until more details are known.
