Rufus Wainwright has revealed his plans to compose an opera.

The singer is to work on a new production for New York's Metropolitan Opera, which will focus on one day in the life of an opera singer. Wainwright told Variety about his ambitions: "I've wanted to write an opera since I was about 14 years old, but I couldn't find a story that I could wrap my head around."

He went on to explain his inspirations: "...the construct of the diva, from Maria Callas to Norma Desmond and the (Jean-Jacques Beineix) movie 'Diva' from the '80s". He added: "And God darn it, there's a bit of me in that too."

No details of when and where the production will run have been released.
