Placebo have announced their drummer Steve Hewitt has quit the band.

Hewitt was with the group for over ten years, and frontman Brian Molko explained the departure was amicable. In a statement on the Placebo website he said: "Being in a band is very much like being in a marriage and in couples - in this case a triple. People can grow apart over the years.

"To say you don't love your partner anymore is inaccurate considering all that you've been through and achieved together. There simply comes a point when you realise that you want different things from your relationship and that you can no longer live under the same roof, so to speak."

Hewitt replaced original drummer Robert Schultzber in 1996, and went on to record four albums as a member of Placebo.

The remaining two members Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal are to start work on the band's sixth album shortly, but have said they are in no rush to find a replacement drummer.
