Johnny Marr has been confirmed as the "fourth member" to join The Cribs.

The legendary ex-Smiths guitarist has been writing songs with the brothers Jarman and will start recording demos this week. Ryan Jarman had already mentioned in an interview with The Independent that they were bringing another person into the band to "mess things up". Now Gary Jarman has revealed that Marr will collaborate with the band this year. Gary told NME.com that they met at a barbeque in Portland, USA, where Gary now lives, and Marr was residing due to his Modest Mouse duties: "I was a bit defensive at first – I was like, 'Who's this other English guy at the barbecue? He came up and started talking to me and then the penny dropped about who he actually was.

"We became mates, then one day we went out for afternoon tea. We drank a few pots of this white tea he’s really into, and decided to work together."

Marr has been writing with The Cribs this week in Stockport, with Gary revealing that the demo sessions may be released as an EP or go towards a full album.

It is not known whether Marr will tour with The Cribs when they kick off their NME Awards Tour this month.
