Art Brut, Mr Kypps, Poole
If Argos isn't bouncing around with unadulterated glee, he's coming into the audience and starting a riot.
With a new album out that's so good it can almost take on Beezlebub himself (it's currently 0-0 according to singer Eddie Argos), Art Brut make their homecoming (partly) to Parkstone in Poole, where Eddie penned most of the lyrics to their debut album. He dedicates every song tonight to the Parkstone collective, including another local rock 'n' roll star in former Suede guitarist Richard Oakes.
A near full house witnesses one of the best rock gigs Mr Kypps will ever host, a far cry from the tribute bands of Ex Take That and RuB40. It is refreshing to have an international band play such a remote venue and the crowd are more than thankful with their display. Current single 'Alcoholics Unanimous' opens the proceedings, and Argos, shoeless and sporting a nipple revealing stripy t-shirt, seems more than happy to be home. If he isn't bouncing around with unadulterated glee, he's coming into the audience and starting a riot. The band, solid and receptive to the audience, are far more intense in the live environment than on record, attacking their guitars with vigour, drummer Mikey Breyer so excited he doesn't even need a stool. With a set list that would satisfy the stringent of Art Brut fans, they set about confident in their craft, making each chorus as thunderous as the next. Crowd favourites are 'Emily Kane' - who apparently lives exactly 13.5 minutes from the venue - and 'Direct Hit' dedicated to his sister, as most of Eddie's family seem correct and present.
With an encore of 'Good Weekend', in just one hour we have all become temporary members of Art Brut, screaming "Art Brut are top of the pops" like crazed mid 60s Beatles fanatics. Disappointingly they don't play 'Pump Up The Volume', but the new material - including what must be a future single in 'Summer Job' slips in with the classics as easy as cheese in a burger.
Who would have thought that Art Brut would attract so many moshers? Speaking witty lyrics over guitar-driven indie rock music must be the new screamo. Thankfully Eddie only teases us with a striptease and holds back from the whole Beth Ditto NME cover reveal. With a warm farewell, it is time for the lights to go up on a successful homecoming.
