The Rapture
We chatted to bassist Matt Safer during The Rapture's recent UK tour.
New York's finest party-starters The Rapture recently played a few dates in the UK. With their new single, album title track 'Pieces Of The People We Love', out now, we had a few minutes on the phone with bassist Matt Safer during the soundcheck of their Coventry gig.
After the critical success of 'Echoes', how much pressure were you under to make the second album?
You only have as much pressure as you let yourself have. I had a great time making the first two and I had a great time making this one.
Do have a strategy for putting on such an immense live show?
Play good, win people over.
Do you feel any differences between UK and US audiences?
Not an awful lot of difference at this stage. Different songs go over differently here and there. People in Scotland love it when we play 'The Sound', because we mention Scotland!
Which current artists are exciting you right now?
The biggest surprise I have is that I really like The Ordinary Boys! I read that they were this shitty Big Brother band, but I saw their video a couple of times and I really liked it. I haven't seen them live, so I've no idea if they can pull it off.
Is there anyone you'd like to work with that you haven't already?
Yes, but we keep it in ourselves!
Your latest single is 'Pieces Of The People we Love', how did you come to work with Danger Mouse?
He was interested basically. We'd met him in a couple of places, and we had friends in common. So when we were figuring out who we wanted to work with, we sent him some music, and he came back saying he really liked it, and wanted to be a part of it. He made the time for it and made it happen.
There were three years between the albums - will we wait that long again?
Not at all. We're writing a few things, but it's only been six months since the last album's release.
What you've created is so loved by both the indie and dance scene - can you see yourself going in either direction more?
No, we just do what we do, and it fits where it fits. We'll stick with what we're interested in.
Are you coming back to the UK this year?
We've got some festival dates planned, so we may do a couple of shows around them.
