The All American Rejects

With All-American Rejects recently releasing 'Move Along' we moved along quicker to catch up with guitarist Nick Wheeler to ask him a few questions about pigeonholes, family and dirty little secrets.
How do you feel about being pigeonholed in the 'Emo' bracket?
I could say something as trite and expected as "all music is emotional", or "classifying music isn't fair to the band", blah blah etc. But fuck that. Call us what you want...we'll play what we wanna play and if you wanna call it emo you can. If you wanna call it screamo you're a fuckin' idiot.
What's your opinion on bands like Green Day launching attacks on their country in their albums? Are you patriotic?
More power to bands like Green Day who criticize our government and get away with it. They have strong beliefs and they're not forcing it upon people, however if you're young and impressionable, you're going to follow your idols. Personally I'm not educated enough in the matter to talk about our country or our president, and even if tyson is, we're not the type of band to force our opinions onto others.
Who was most important when you were growing up that got you into music?
My family introduced me to music, especially my sister. Her tape collection consisted of def leppard, bon jovi, skid row, poison, etc. Those bands, and their guitar players, really made me love music.
Whats different about this album? How does it progress the sound of the band?
This album definitely sounds bigger than the last. We're a few years older, and the record sounds it...not saying that makes it better, but we think it does. And this time around we had mike and chris, where as last time it was just the two of us. There is more lively feel and band dynamic that our live show has, and our first album lacks.
Why is the album called Move Along? What are you moving on from?
Its not that we're moving on or away from anything, its more about optimism and the place we're in right now. We've solidified our lineup and are now a complete band, and we've made a new (better or so we think) record.
You're described as geek rock, in the same vein as Weezer. Do you mind being in that company?
I'm definitely not cool and I listened to Weezer once upon a time. I like to contribute the comparison to playing upbeat pop music in a time where pop/punk is taking over the world and how neither of us really fit in there.
Your last single was called 'Dirty Little Secret', whats the best one you've got?
My secret is that I hate being asked what my dirty little secret is. I guess the question is inevitable since we have a song called "dirty little secret", but its not about us.
Can you tell us a bit more about the video? Isn't is based on a secret sharing website?
All of our songs are pretty relatable I think, and I think the video is too...its more about making a connection with our fans, or anyone out there really. Some of the secrets in the video could very well be ours, or anyone elses too.
