Alessi’s Ark Interviews Treetop Flyers
Alessi Laurent-Marke does our job for us by interviewing the hotly tipped folk band.
Treetop Flyers have just released their new EP 'To Bury The Past', and played a launch party in London with their friend Alessi's Ark. The harmonising Americana folk band were game enough to be interviewed by Alessi Laurent-Marke herself, who tomorrow will be grilled by the members of the now London-based band. Check out Treetop Flyers with this download of 'Mountain Song'.
Here are Alessi's questions, answered by all five of Treetop Flyers:
Alessi: If you could power your tour van using any kind of energy, which would you choose?
Laurie: Fart or spunk power.
Tomer: I'd use palm oil so we can finally kill all the Orangutan. I hate them, thinking they're almost as smart as me. Who do they think they are? In all seriousness, I'd use bitch juice.
Matthew: Rocking energy.
Sam: I would power my van on other people's negative energy.
Reid: Midget power! I would love six midgets to push us along. No offence to midgets, I am vertically challenged myself!
Alessi: When do the Treetops truly come into season? Are you spring/summer/autumn or winter people?
Laurie: All year non stop rampage.
Tomer: Definitely an autumn person. Some places are just not meant to be lived in. Particularly where I'm answering these questions from now, Florida...
Matthew: We are great regardless of season.
Sam: Spring because I get excited about the summer that never seems to come in England any more
Reid: I like Laurie's answer here!
Alessi: What are your favourite puddings?
Laurie: A hot swedish girl fresh out of the shower.
Tomer: Tres Leches cake. Best ever!
Matthew: Pavlova.
Sam: Anything without fruit in it.
Reid: Strawberry cheesecake Hagen Daaz always hits the spot.
Alessi: If you all swapped instruments for a show, what would you all choose?
Laurie: The skin flute
Matthew: I would play anything and groove like a bad man.
Sam: I would love to be a cool drummer but the minute I pick up sticks all timing goes out the window.
Reid: I would love to play the drums, but I can't, so I'll stop there
Tomer: That would have to be a hard one because there are three guitars so someone would be swapping a guitar for a guitar. I'd play the guitar.
Alessi: Is there a good anagram in your band name?
Laurie: Thats beyond my brain power to try and work out.
Tomer: Never thought about it! Let's see... Pets Rot Freely or Freely Protest.
Matthew: Aanagrams are stupid.
Reid: I came up with Protest Freely, Pretty Rose Elf and Sly Port Rooftop, last one not great. In my old band Morrison Steamfayre, ours was Rosa My Meats On Fire!
Alessi: What's your feeling on fellows in flip-flops/sandals?
Laurie: Whatever you need to wear is fine by me.
Tomer: I wore some this week to save me from dropping dead in the extreme heat of the Florida sun and I hated myself for it the whole time. They're just not a good look.
Matthew: Indoors yes, outdoors no.
Sam: It's all good just don't wear socks and keep the toe nails under control. I was once in bed with my girlfriend and my foot dug into her leg - she recoiled and ripped my whole fucking toenail off. I couldn't wear a shoe for several days. This is all true.
Reid: I don’t think men should wear them apart from on the beach. Ever! Girls look good in sandals.
Alessi: Do you ever play music barefoot?
Laurie: No way, thats for Christian rock bands.
Tomer: Yeah, but I'm usually naked as well.
Matthew: No. Solid shoes are a must.
Sam: Not on stage, I would stub my toes on things, but I would like to. It's all a bit traumatic since that toenail incident, and anyway it would stop me wearing wonderful boots and such.
Reid: No but might try. We had photos done barefoot.
Alessi: What's your favourite musical decade?
Laurie: This one.
Tomer: Every decade apart from the 80s.
Matthew: Tough one. All music from all decades are accessible. The Beatles and Motown owned the sixties so I'm gonna go with the sixties.
Sam: The early 70s - I would prefer to say 1960 to 1978 ish.
Reid: I like most apart from the 80s.
Alessi: We both have a mutual love for older music but is there anything recent that's been keeping you good company?
Laurie: The Sword, Jet Black, The Barker Band, Scorpion Face.
Matthew: Wilco continue to blow me away.
Sam: I am lucky to know quite a few amazing players that keep me on my toes and make me feel lucky to make music. Everyone in the band makes me feel like I am in great company. I like Alena Dianne, Jono McCleery, my housemate James Hancox, Elvis Perkins.
Reid: Floating Action, Monsters Of Folk and Scorpion Face.
Alessi: When I listen to your music, I can smell a woodfire, cinnamon and hot amp valves. Am I close?
Laurie: More like skid marks and Sam's death farts.
Tomer: We all usually just smell Sam.
Matthew: Well I smoke cigarettes, eat cinamon buns and there's a lot of valves in the room. So yes.
Sam: Yes. Love the valves. I have a couple of old guitars that smell amazing, just like an old library. Smell is a very powerful thing for me.
Reid: If you get any closer you would burn! I would maybe add Sam kebab wraps.
Alessi: Neil Diamond, Neil Young or Neil Kinnock?
Laurie: Neil Young.
Tomer: Neil Young.
Matthew: The reverend Neil Young. I love Neil Diamond though. 'Delirious Love' is a tune.
Sam: Neil Young is without question the absolute daddy.
Reid: Young Neil Diamond
Alessi: You harmonise like you're brothers, how long have you all been singing?
Laurie: I don't sing.
Tomer: I only started singing when this band started.
Matthew: I have been singing for as long as I can remember.
Sam: About four years. but together nearly a year. It's all happened very fast.
Reid: I came singing out of the womb.
Alessi: Do you have a favourite tune on a jukebox?
Laurie: NWA 'Straight Out Of Compton'.
Tomer: Anything by The Rolling Stones.
Matthew: I don't really hang out where jukeboxes are but it would have to be 'Like A Rolling Stone' by Bob Dylan.
Reid: I love 'Brown Sugar' by The Stones, or 'Cool For Cats' by Squeeze.
Alessi: I love breakfast. Do you have breakfast or skip it?
Laurie: Are you buying?
Tomer: Do you have breakfast or skip it?
Matthew: I love breakfast too. It's a must. Always have breakfast. ALWAYS!
Sam: Depends on the day.
Reid: I always try not to skip. As the old folk say, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day".
Alessi: I think the TTF spectrum is olive green, sky blue, earth brown and tan leather - am I missing any colours?
Laurie: Denim, black lace and leather.
Tomer: That's pretty spot on.
Matthew: Today I'm wearing a white striped shirt, beige t-shirt, dark blue jeans, pants and socks and brown shoes.
Sam: Pop some tweed in there, gotta have tweed.
Reid: Purple, crimson and black.
