Single Reviews: Rita Ora: ‘R.I.P’ review

Rita Ora's 'R.I.P' is a stark reminder of the bleak world we live in. With Drake, Tinie Tempah and Chase & Status included in the song's hefty credits, the song has all the street-cred needed to be a giant pop hit and that's the biggest problem with 'R.I.P'. It's all too perfect.

'R.I.P to the girl you used to see / her days are over / baby, she's over', Rita trills sounding like Rihanna after spending some serious money on singing lessons, but the lyrics seem to go nowhere in a synth-heavy drum and bass song that is steadily and bizarrely aggressive. And Tinie Tempah does the song no favours when he leers the line, 'I’ll make you call me daddy, even though you ain’t my daughter'. Even the production is telegraphed, as though the song was genetically engineered in a sterile laboratory by label bosses.

Ora is capable of much better than 'R.I.P' ever dares her to deliver. This is throwaway pop that manages somehow to be even worse than the worst of Rihanna.

News: Ronnie Wood says The Rolling Stones may yet tour in 2012

Ronnie Wood has revealed that Rolling Stones may tour in 2012 after all.

Wood said in the interview: "It looks like we are going to be doing more stuff. I am keeping October/November free, that's what I've been told. I'm just awaiting more information."

If this is true, the tour will be the band's first since the end of 'A Bigger Bang Tour' in 2007, which grossed $558,255,524 and has become the second highest-grossing tour of all time.

Wood, bass player in the band, was quick to put an end to any rumours of new material from the group: "New ones? Are you joking? We are familiarising ourselves with our back catalogue and have only scratched the surface."

2012 marks 50 years since The Rolling Stones first got together and the group will release an anniversary documentary to mark the occasion.

The Voice UK has its semi-finalists: Jaz Ellington, Ruth Brown, Leanne Mitchell and Tyler James.

The British public had opted to keep both Jaz and Ruth, earning them an automatic place in the semi-finals as their fellow contestants were left in the danger zone.

Sir Tom Jones was the first to have to make the choice as to who he would save as Matt and Sueleen, Leanne and Adam were in the bottom three.

Looking visibly upset, Sir Tom Jones chose to send Leanne through to the semi-finals, saying: "Based on Saturday's performance, I must go with Leanne Mitchell."

After a performance from Team Danny, will.i.am was then forced to make his choice for the semi-final spot. Deliberating for a moment, the Black Eyed Peas-star opted to save Tyler James.

will.i.am said: "Now it's battle-time... I need somebody that is given any scenario and comes through with flying colours. That's Tyler."

The Voice UK continues next week as the contestants from Team Danny and Team Jessie fight for their place in the semi-finals.

News: The Enemy brand Simon Cowell a parasite

Tom Clarke of The Enemy has branded Simon Cowell a "parasite" who exploits "people with miserable lives".

In an interview with NME, Clarke discussed the appetites of The X Factor mogul and his apparent need to exploit people to further his bank balance.

Clarke then took a swipe at Cowell's obsession with Rolls-Royce and dubbed the Sony boss as a parasite for both his and the show's exploitative nature.

Clarke said: "He wants a new Rolls-Royce, understandable, the new one looks amazing. But The X Factor is just the exploitation of people with miserable lives. He's a parasite off people who've had bad lives."

However, Cowell wasn't the only person on his list. The singer then went on to hit back at the government for its pasty tax, which has put a strain on his loving relationship with Greggs: "Tax on pastry is a pisstake. I pretty much live on Greggs. If it's heated up, then you pay extra tax for having a hot sausage roll. So in theory, as it's cold by the time you get it home, can you get a rebate?"

Single Reviews: Tulisa Contostavlos: ‘Young’ review

‘Forgive me for what I have done / ‘cause I’m young’ seems a bit too on the nose now, even for someone as brazen as Tulisa, but the theme of forgiveness ran through ‘Young’ long before the sex tape ever reared its ugly, ugly head. Tulisa comes back fighting with an energetic dance-anthem for a generation of rebels.

Tulisa’s debut single is brash and bolshy with a melody that sticks in your head, though not for very long. ‘Young’ is standard summer pop fare for this time of year, one that practically begs to be listened to at full pelt in a car with the windows down. The song starts off well through the verses as it takes inspiration from Ibiza club songs, but there’s a gulf between its inspirations and its aspirations. Ibiza anthems tend to build to huge, tantalising choruses where ‘Young’ stutters to build to anything more than a whimper.

A good, if slightly unsurprising, introduction to Tulisa’s solo career.

News: The Voice UK: song choices for week three to include Kelly Clarkson and Radiohead

The song choices are out for tonight's edition of The Voice and the singers will tackle material from Radiohead, Robin S, Kelly Clarkson and Bruno Mars.

Tonight is once again a face off between Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am as their singers fight to stay in the competition for another round.

In another week of safe choices for will's team, Frances Wood gets the best draw as she tackles the 90s dance hit by Robin S.

Joelle, Jaz and Tyler James are on safe ground again. Joelle is once again given a diva ballad to sing, while Jaz works his smooth vocals through Bruno Mars and Billy Joel.

Tyler's song choice will no doubt have girls and boys' hearts palpitating, but the decision to sing 'Sign Your Name' seems too easy.

Sir Tom Jones is on similarly familiar territory for his acts as he prepares to send home another one of his team. Ruth Brown will take on Emeli Sandé and Matt and Sueleen prepare to sing 'Missing' by Everything But The Girl.

Adam Isaac is set to perform Radiohead's 'High and Dry', while Leanne Mitchell will sing an interpretation of Nina Simone's 'I Put a Spell On You'.

This week will see the coaches duet with their artists in a group number.

Tonight's song-list is:

Team Will:

Frances Wood – 'Show Me Love' (Robin S)

Jaz Ellington – 'The Way You Are' / 'Just the Way You Are' (Billy Joel / Bruno Mars)

Joelle Moses – 'Stronger' (Kelly Clarkson)

Tyler James – 'Sign Your Name' (Terence Trent D'Arby)

Team Tom:

Adam Isaac – 'High and Dry' (Radiohead)

Matt & Sueleen – 'Missing' (Everyting But The Girl)

Leanne Mitchell – 'Put a Spell on You' (Nina Simone)

Ruth Brown – 'Next to Me' (Emeli Sandé)

Tonight's edition of The Voice will air on BBC One at 6.10pm.

Björk has cancelled additional concert dates and commitments as she continues treatment for her inflamed vocal cord nodule.

The 'Biophilia' singer will no longer be able to play Primavera Sound Festival over Barcelona and Porto in June because her treatment program will prevent her from singing.

This is the second time a nodule has prevented Björk from singing. In 2008, she was forced to pull out of several shows as she treated the nodule with stretching exercise and rest.

The organisers of Primavera Sound said: "After cancelling some shows due to an inflamed nodule, Bjork's specialist doctor advised her to keep resting and not to continue with the shows as they could bring a permanent damage to her voice.

"We are very sorry about any inconvenience this might bring and appreciate your understanding. We wish Bjork a quick and full recovery [so we can] continue enjoying her talent soon."
In light of the cancellation, the festival organisers have offered ticket-holders a refund.

Reports are coming in that Britney Spears has officially signed on to be a judge for The X Factor USA season two.

Britney has been linked with the American panel since Simon Cowell jettisoned Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger after a lukewarm first season.

E! Online now reports that Britney has signed on the proverbial dotted line after ironing out the finer details of her tenure as judge on the Fox singing competition. The deal is said to be worth $15m.

"The contract is signed. There's been a lot of back and forth over the past few weeks as they negotiated the small details, but she's on. It's all completed and Britney is beyond excited," a source explained.

"She's ready for this. She can't wait to sit down next to Simon at the judges' table and give this everything she's got. She is excited about showing the world that she can do this, and do this well. This is the perfect next stage in her career. Both Britney and Simon are very excited to work together."

Serving as a judge has boosted the profiles of Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Tulisa Contostavlos in the UK, so this could be a wise move for developing Britney's career even further.

News: Olly Murs replaces Rizzle Kicks with Chiddy Bang for US release

Olly Murs has replaced Rizzle Kicks with Chiddy Bang for the US release of 'Heart Skips a Beat'.

Brighton duo Rizzle Kicks originally appeared on the UK release of the song from Olly's second album, which got to number one in three countries in Europe: Germany, Switzerland and the UK.

This change comes ahead of Olly's North American tour with One Direction, though it feels slightly unnecessary considering the exposure that Murs will get as a result of the One Direction support slot.

Even after all these years, Will Young's 'Evergreen' retains the honour of being the 21st Century's best-selling single.

Will's double A-side single 'Evergreen' and 'Anything Is Possible' have sold over 1.8 million copies in the UK, reports the Official Charts Company.
We're not sure how that reflects the tastes of our generation, but the feat is no less impressive.

Adele's 'Someone Like You' holds second place at two with sales of 1.35m. And in another appearance from ITV's forgotten singing competition, Jordan's victim Gareth Gates is at three with 'Unchained Melody', which sold a respectable 1.34m units.

Lady GaGa is at 14 with 'Poker Face' and distressing recalls of the 90s/00s pop bubble appear at 17 and 26 with Hear'Say's 'Pure and Simple' and Atomic Kitten's 'Whole Again'.

Will took to Twitter to acknowledge and mock his achievement: "Ten years ago I won Pop Idol. Since then I have still not achieved my dream of a Tupperware range. Life can be cruel..."

News: Damon Albarn has begun work on a new solo album

Damon Albarn recently revealed that he has begun work on a new solo album.

The Blur frontman and half of the creative force behind Gorillaz made the announcement during an interview with BBC Radio 4's Front Row.

Albarn said of his new project: "This week, we're mucking around with these Russian synthesizers in a very loose mind of doing some kind of record under my name. I suppose you could call it a solo record, but I don't like that word. It sounds very lonely - 'solo'. I don't really want to be solo in my life. But yeah, I'm making another record."

If the project continues on, this will be Albarn's first solo release since 2003's 'Democrazy'.

Albarn recently clarified that, despite media rumours to the contrary, Blur and Gorillaz could still have a future together, though it remained uncertain at the moment due to disagreements within the acts.

The singer then went on to say that he's trying to distance himself from the London 2012 Olympic Games because the event is now extremely corporate: "The corporate side I find a bit depressing. There's too much of it [sponsorship]. A lot of people see it differently. We're putting on another celebration for the official closure of the Olympic Games."

"But we're putting it on for London and people who hopefully want to sing their hearts out in a park. I'm signed up to the idea of regeneration in London and putting on a good account of ourselves; definitely."

Dan Mangan has released the stunning video for track 'About As Helpful As You Can Be Without Being Any Help At All'.

The video sees Mangan dressed like a future incarnation of The Doctor, performing a dance routine that can only be described as Thriller reimagined by Byron and the islanders from The Wicker Man. (The original, not the Nicolas Cage version.)

'About As Helpful...' is a dreamy folk-pop song with a pure heart that edges him out over his contemporaries.

Mangan recently played a sold-out show at London’s Bush Hall and a set at Sunday's Camden Crawl.

Passion Pit have released new single 'Take a Walk', the lead single from 'Gossamer'.

The song is pure Passion Pit electropop with fairground sounds and a rigorously determined percussion throughout. The lyrics seem to be focused on life in the recession with references to his partner's lost pension.

Angelakos has a good feeling about the album, saying: "It's an absolutely beautiful record. I'm so excited."

News: The Voice UK results: Hannah Berney and Ruth-Ann St. Luce voted off

Hannah Berney and Ruth-Ann St. Luce have exited The Voice UK.

In a difficult week to predict, Hannah and Ruth-Anne fell into the bottom four with Toni Warne and Max Milner.

Danny O'Donoghue looked uncomfortable with the impending decision as he saw Berney against Milner, whom he'd backed from the very beginning of the show.

"No-one from my team deserves to get knocked out," O'Donoghue said.

He then continued: "When I turned around and I was in a bidding war with Will, I saw a lot of myself in you. You've shown so many sides of you throughout the course. It's been a pleasure being your mentor all this while."

After a reality TV show pause, he then spoke to Berney: "From day one, we've always been a collaborative team and that's what I love. This show is just showcasing what amazing people are out there. The way you did that mash-up, that's what the industry needs, people thinking in a unique way."

Despite this comment, he then chose to send Berney home in an unsurprising move from The Script frontman.

Jessie J was visibly shocked by seeing Warne in the bottom. Speaking to Warne, the coach said: "I feel like people haven't seen the best of you yet. Your vocal ability is so extreme. Your voice is timeless."

Jessie then said to Ruth-Ann St. Luce: "You're 18 and the things you can do with your voice, so many singers would dream to be able to do. But you do have issues with pitch. Your path is gleaming, this is not the end for you."

The 'LaserLight' singer then chose to send Ruth-Anne home and send Toni Warne through to the next phase of the competition.

News: The Voice UK live shows: week two song choices revealed

BBC One's The Voice UK has announced the song choices for the second week of live shows.

This week sees Team Danny and Team Jessie battle against each other as each coach must send one act home.

Song choices are a little more varied this week, though still keeping in-line with the standard fare for a reality music competition.

Danny O'Donoghue's songs include Justin Timberlake, Mama Cass and Tom Petty. There are some pleasantly left-field choices for his artists, though, in the form of Kate Bush and The Temper Trap.

Jessie J's choices will see selections from the back catalogues of Creedence Clearwater Revival / Tina Turner, Elvis Presley and Coldplay. Jessie's more surprising choices come in the form of Cheryl Cole's 'Promise This' and Basement Jaxx. There's no confirmation as to whether Ruth-Ann St. Luce will perform the Adele arrangement or Cole's single version.

Saturday night's song-list will be:

Team Jessie:

Ruth-Ann St. Luce - 'Promise This' (Cheryl Cole)
Becky Hill - 'Good Luck' (Basement Jaxx)
Cassius Henry - 'Paradise' (Coldplay)
Toni Warne - 'Proud Mary' (Creedence Clearwater Revival/Tina Turner)
Vince Kidd - 'Always On My Mind' (Brenda Lee/Elvis Presley)

Team Danny:

Max Milner - 'Free Fallin'' (Tom Petty)
Bo Bruce - 'Running Up That Hill' (Kate Bush)
Hannah Berney - 'Cry Me A River' (Julie London/Justin Timberlake mash-up)
Aleks Josh - 'Dream A Little Dream Of Me' (Mama Cass)
David Julien - 'Sweet Disposition' (The Temper Trap)

Tyler James' performance of 'Higher Love' helped the James Vincent McMorrow version of Steve Winwood's song into the top 40 this week.
