Rusty Bear - ‘Falling Stones’ review

Rusty Bear have crept up on the indie scene from nowhere. Or more accurately, a small hamlet of Yorkshire.

Like Villagers before them, Rusty Bear have created a sound on ‘Falling Stones’ that is tinged with moments of dark brooding that seep out of the music. The lower harmonies have an affecting – but not affected – breathy quality that creates an otherworldly chanting; combined with dreamy Spanish guitars, this works to create a song that chugs along at its own surreal pace.

Showing that they are aware of the pop culture zeitgeist, there’s even a lyrical nod to Lady GaGa in amongst ‘Falling Stones’: ‘As a child, you sang to GaGa, no understanding of what you’d sung. When it’s love, if it’s not rough, it isn’t fun.’ It seems bizarre, but it works as part of the bigger scope of the song.

This is a group that is ripe with raw potential. Rusty Bear's debut album 'From Source to Sea' is available on March 26th.
