Brit Awards - Memorable Moments

The Brit Awards 2012 are imminently upon us and we've been giving some thought to the awards ceremony.

Since the Brits started in the 1970s, the ceremony has become known for its inventive performances, hot gossip and the occasional headline-grabbing controversy. Whatever your view of the awards, you're guaranteed at least one memorable moment every year. Good or bad.

Here are three of our favourite Brit Awards moments.

1. Michael Jackson and Jarvis Cocker:

Michael Jackson elevating himself to the level of mystical healer and messiah... What could go wrong? This incendiary performance sent Pulp front-man Jarvis Cocker into such a frenzy that he had no other option than to storm the stage in protest at the absurdity of it all. In doing so, he cemented himself in Brit Awards history as the tabloids and news channels spun up a storm.

2. Melanie C calls out the Gallaghers:

Liam Gallagher went on record as saying that he wouldn't attend the Brit Awards in 1997 because he wanted to smack the Spice Girls. When the Spice Girls received the Brit for Best British Video, Melanie C - aka Sporty Spice - publicly called Liam out on the matter and issued a succinct response to him: "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough." Even a Mancunian wouldn't stand a chance against a feisty Scouser.

3. Adele brings the world to its knees:

Adele had achieved a certain level of fame before 2011, but no-one could have predicted just how mesmerising or memorable her Brit Awards 2011 performance would be. With an emotional performance, she brought the room and the country to an awed silence and her album '21' exploded soon after.
