You never can tell what We Are Scientists are going to do next. After the peerless 'After Hours' and bizarrely camp 'Chick Lit', it seems odd that the Brooklyn pair have chosen a song distinguished by its very lack of oddness, eschewing more obvious gems like the bitter and angst-ridden 'Tonight' or the 80s-infused 'Lethal Enforcer'.
Perhaps they've decided to play it safe, after their last single only made a minor dent in the UK charts (#36, to be exact), by deliberately releasing a rather ordinary song which may have the mass appeal their more quirky efforts may not. Whatever the reason, on the first listen 'Impatience' fails to hook and seduce. Stranded in a musical no man's land, it isn't mediocre enough to be classed as album filler nor interesting enough to be considered as strong single material.
But repeated exposure proves it to be a grower, and quite a decent little number at that. The same upbeat chord sequence is played over and over throughout the song, with only a brief reprieve in the middle, giving it a driving, relentless quality and this combined with the accessible lyrics, catchy chorus and frontman Keith Murray doing that yelping-as-singing thing he does so well, makes it a likeable enough prospect. Okay, so it's nothing special and is probably the kind of tune they could easily hammer out in their sleep, but it ticks just enough boxes, even if it doesn’t tick the ones labelled 'exciting' and 'imaginative'.
