More on: Elbow

Elbow have won this 2008's Mercury Music Prize.

Their fourth album, 'The Seldom Seen Kid', was picked from a shortlist of 12 albums to win the award and a £20,000 prize. The Manchester band beat the last minute bookie's favourite Burial, as well as The Last Shadow Puppets and Radiohead.

Accepting the award at last night's ceremony, the visibly moved frontman Guy Garvey said: "Thank you very much. I'd like to thank all the players we've been with since day one, including Phil Chadwick, our manager.

"This is the best thing that's ever happened to us. We'd like to dedicate this award to Bryan Glancy, one of the greatest men who ever lived. Thank you very much and have a top evening!"

The shortlist was:

Adele - '19'
British Sea Power - 'Do You Like Rock Music?'
Burial - 'Untrue'
Elbow - 'The Seldom Seen Kid'
Estelle - 'Shine'
The Last Shadow Puppets - 'The Age Of The Understatement'
Laura Marling - 'Alas I Cannot Swim'
Neon Neon - 'Stainless Style'
