Much in the same way Pete Yorn is able to captivate his listeners with personal tales set over a backdrop of simple guitar, Martha Wainwright's 'You Cheated Me' is deliciously focused folk-rock. Sharp beats, crisp acoustic guitar and Wainwright's to-the-point story of betrayal make a winning combination, even if the structure is boringly predictable.
There are some huge flaws though. As personal and to-the-point it may sound, lyrically, 'You Cheated Me' is about as engaging as a dinner date with an amoeba, and there is very little in the way of originality. As imperfect as it is though, there is a strong appeal to be found in the honest music and understated vocals that manages to just about outweigh the lack of any lingering lines. 'You Cheated Me' is much like a drunken night on the town – great fun at the time, with few memories afterwards.
