The alarm bells should always start ringing for people when songwriters begin using words like "shine", "star", "sunshine" and "rain" as it usually means the lyricist is running out of things to say, so a nice safe meteorological metaphor should suffice until he shifts the mental block. 'Shine On' proves no exception to the rule as it meanders through the a to z of how to write a laid back summery 'anthem', without ever threatening to lift the clouds over anybody's head. It's jaunty, pleasant and well executed, and all the hooks are in the right places. However, in the end, instead of basking the listener in natural sunshine, it's the equivalent of three minutes down some dodgy tanning salon on the high street.
The impression is of a band going through the motions and performing out of a sense of duty rather than any artistic compulsion. This is further compounded with the b-side which is an instrumental run-through of the same song or Karaoke with the Kooks if you prefer. There's something wrong here, so we must ask: why should we shine on when you're content to be so dull?
