Thomas White of Electric Soft Parade and Brakes - you would have thought he was rather busy with those projects. However, after listening to his brooding, masterful solo album you can see why he felt the need to get this music out of his head and into the hearts of others.
After a subdued opening the album gets into its stride with darkly gripping single 'The Runaround'; featuring layers of distorted guitar atop programmed beats, it manages to sound like early BRMC interspersed with some more psychedelic moments. 'I Dream Of Black' seems to alternate between darker more full-on numbers packed with scuzzy guitar and shorter sparser arrangements like 'Starry Nite #2' and the opener 'Is It Wrong To Lose Faith In The One You Love?'
'The Silence Stops Tonight' starts with a glorious ever present hiss, and builds slowly to a enjoyably intense finale - it's like some listening to something late at night on a stumbled upon radio frequency. The centre piece of the album is the instrumental run of the title track, 'This Is Just A Little Interlude', and 'Starry Nite #3', a brave move for someone who in his previous work has been progressive but ultimately poppy. You would imagine that David Bowie's 'Low' had a large influence on White during recording, particularly in the brooding dissonance present throughout 'I Dream Of Black'. There is a singular vision at work here that you feel would only be depleted by collaboration, and in this is the justification for this release amid White's other projects.
Dark, downbeat but never depressing, there is a mystery and beauty throughout the record and you can't help feeling that every time you play it again you will discover something new.
