There's something intrinsically romantic about a piano cascading over waves of distorted guitars. It's not necessarily a romance tied to love or lust, but one of remembrance for traditional rock and roll that is barely heard in a modern mainstream soundscape of hot producers, hip hop kings and bedroom stars. Coming somewhere in between 'Oliver's Army' and a rocked-up ABBA, the opening minute of 'Sequestered In Memphis' is much like the rest of the track - booze-soaked, filthy rock music that isn't always fresh, but certainly hits the spot.
The lyrics tell an age-old tale of a heavy night on the sauce, and a somewhat witty account of a midnight siren: "In the bar light, she looked alright/in the daylight, she was desperate". While the subject matter is sometimes tiresome, the music constantly jumps and pops with heavy guitars, organs and saxophones. Throw in the gravelly backing vocals and a notion that this could well be The Zutons collaborating with Social Distortion, and The Hold Steady confidently prove that tried and tested doesn't have to mean old and boring.
