Whereas it's easy enough to criticise the latest crop of 'scenesters' who profess to rant about denouncing consumerism in all its ugly form, Brighton three-piece Elle Milano's ranting has a certain tongue in cheek prowess. Whether they intentionally intend to be amusing or not is uncertain, but their Ikea anecdotes in 'Laughing All The Way To The Plank' provoke an unintentional smirk, rather than the usual cringe.
Choosing a modern comparison evokes thoughts of the pop-punk mastery of The Automatic during the pre-Pennie departure period, particularly in vocal style. However, an underlying piano melody, which would not sound out of place in the 1970s new wave musings of a Joe Jackson hit, reveals a clever blend of musical style presenting the listener with more depth than their average counterparts.
