The latest single to be lifted from their album 'The Seldom Seen Kid' is just the kind of song to get Elbow fans extremely nervous; boasting a thunderous chanting chorus and currently being played left, right and centre over ITV's Euro 2008 coverage, 'One Day Like This' is just the kind of thing that could turn Elbow from well kept secret into mainstream rock gods.
Guy Garvey's sonorous vocals soar over a swell of strings and piano atop reliably rousing drums, his lyrics capturing a real sense of euphoria: "I can only think it must be love/well anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day".
Never giving in to the temptation to rush towards the end, the arrangement works effortlessly towards the finale - a heroic mass sing-along that is as effective on record as it is live, as layers and layers of voices join with Garvey to sing "throw those curtains wide/one day like this a year will see me right". It's hard to disagree.
Elbow's greatest single, and so uplifting that they really should be giving out copies of 'One Day Like This' on the NHS, but then the secret really would be out...
