Ben Siddall and company are back with their first single since 2007's debut album. Has anything changed? On first listen, it's immediate that Siddall has lost none of his mastery of the perfect hook - in fact 'The Good Old Days' is a glorious, uplifting, jangly piece of retro-pop. It even disguises the woe is me lyrics - it feels wrong to want to dance with a soppy grin on your face to lines such as "I have been so down and so lonely/I have been so beaten and blue". Of course, this is all part of The Lodger's charm - music to dance round your bedsit to.
The repetitive guitar riff over the double whammy chorus is a delight, but while it hits you full on and lodges in your head, it is easy to see how it could be seen as throwaway. But if a pop song was The Lodger's intention, then they've mastered a mini-classic
